Katie’s Notebook: August 1, 2023

Can you believe it is August 1st? Last week I spent most of my days bobbing around in a lake on vacation — water is truly the only way to survive the summer in North Carolina. School starts again at the end of the month, but I’m happy that there are still a few pool days ahead of us before the hustle starts again. Let’s get into my notes for the week…

  1. My favorite kids clothes are on sale: Have you ever shopped Primary? They make really high quality basics for kids. As most of my 6 year old’s clothes are showing the wear of a fun summer, I ordered a few things (polka dot dress , perfect pocket long sleeve dress, and undershorts ) from their summer sale to start the elementary school year off right.

  2. Why are mom’s always called first?: My favorite researcher of all things parenting just wrote an article digging into the data behind what we all know— schools usually call mom first — even when both parents claim the same amount of availability. We still have a long way to go with parental gender equality. Check the article out for practical tips on how we can change the norms.

  3. All’s not fair in advertising: The Center for Intimacy Justice filed a complaint with the FTC to investigate Meta’s differing standards on advertising for women’s vs. men’s sexual health companies. I’ve seen examples from FemTech companies of ads that have skirted around sexual health topics with euphemisms and been rejected, while other men’s health companies have literally used the eggplant emoji and been accepted. Keep up the good work CIJ!

  4. Put it on the calendar: The Digital Medicine Evidence Conference is Dec 7-8, 2023 in NYC! (PS- I’m on the board now so let me know if there are topics you’d like covered!)

  5. My favorite houseplants: It’s a running joke in my family that I am not great with gardening and outside plants (though my sister is a genius!) but I have managed to keep some philodendrons alive for years. They are my top recommendation if you want to get started in greenifying your space. Water them once a week. Leave them alone otherwise. Mine even survived my windowless office days. Enjoy!

That’s a wrap! Stay hydrated out there!
