Katie’s Notebook: July 13, 2023
It’s all fun and good news in this week’s Notebook entry. I’m sharing some new media I’ve enjoyed, Prime Day purchases, and a big win for women’s health and bodily autonomy. Without further delay….
Solidly-in-my-30s Prime Day purchases: I was not immune to the siren’s call of sales on Prime Day. I didn’t go for any big-ticket items, but did add a few life-improvers to my cart. My rule was that each purchase had to be at least 30% off the regular ticket price. Here’s what I bought: Sunday Riley Good Genes Serum, the under sink silicone mat I didn’t know I needed to protect my kitchen cabinets, fresh potholders to replace the burnt and stained ones I’ve used since I got married, staple black leggings, a fresh electric toothbrush (I tossed my old one a few years ago and have been waiting on a good deal for a new one. 50% off- score!), and a chic and slim glass pitcher for iced tea — another move in my goal to reduce plastic use. All and all I am excited about these relatively boring items, but it’s the little things, ya know?
THIS IS HUGE Women’s Health News: FDA approves first over the counter birth control pill — to be available in 2024. Hallelujah! Birth control pills aren’t for everyone, but I am thrilled to see less gatekeeping around effective pregnancy prevention methods. —Insert happy dance—
Latest Read: My book club chose, With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo. This YA novel covers both adult topics (pregnancy, parenting arrangements) and the coming-of-age struggles of being a high schooler (what’s after graduation, first loves, teen friendships) with the added interest of exploring cooking as love, culture, and passion. I listened to the audiobook which was read by the author herself— a true treat.
Kids Books: We go to the library weekly and I have almost as much fun picking out story books as my own reads. Along the lines of food and culture — Teatime Around The World, Everyone Loves Lunchtime but Zia, and Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao — have been winners in our house.
The Jock Bra?!: This Embodied Podcast episode, The Stories Behind Our Bras, includes interesting tidbits about the invention of the first sports bra (the first prototype was 2 jock straps sewn together!!), how it intersected with the timing of Title 9, and how different women feel about bras (it’s more complicated than you think.)
Wishing you a wonderful rest of the week.
