Katie’s Notebook: June 29, 2023
Hello hello! This is my June 29, 2023 Katie’s Notebook entry. Let’s jump into things, shall we!
Book Recommendation: I’m an avid reader and love a historical fiction with a strong female lead. I recently finished Weyward, a tale about three women’s lives spanning 400 hundred years. It touches on power dynamics between men and women, subtle ways women have subverted oppression and developed resilience, and how understanding our past helps us become our true selves. This is one of my favorite books of the last year. 10/10 recommend.
Peach Season: Stone fruit season is so magical and fleeting — you can’t get good peaches outside of summer. I made this peach crisp recipe for my family and it was devoured. Hint— double the crisp topping and serve with vanilla ice cream while warm.
Whoop Whoop: I’ve been keeping an eye on Whoop and Oura — two wearable companies that are also conducting women’s health research with their devices. This article summarizes studies around the menstrual cycle and athletic performance as well as heart rate as a predictor for delivery (very interesting.) I’ll definitely be watching this: “Following the success of their menstrual cycle and pregnancy research and features, Whoop’s goal is to continue supporting reproductive health through all life stages, including the postpartum phase, perimenopause, and menopause.”
Tech + SDOH: SDOH = social determinants of health. We’ve long known in public health that access to healthy food, needed medications, stable housing and more directly affects health and healthcare costs. This Uber Health ‘food as medicine’ initiative is neat.
Tidy up your digital life: I’ve been using Unroll.Me for years and it is THE BEST. Unroll.Me is a free service where you can ‘roll up’ marketing emails into one daily digest and quickly unsubscribe from junk. I just did my quarterly clean up and it feels so good to have a more managable inbox (and if I feel like shopping — all the sales are in one single email.)
That’s it for the week, friends. I hope everyone has fun over the Fourth of July weekend. I plan to spend a lot of time at the pool.
