Katie’s Notebook: Sept. 7, 2023

Hello Hello,

I’m excited about this week’s Notebook— it’s a mixed bag including information on breast cancer screening innovation, female founder funds, the ethics of embryo research, where the collective WE are with the future of work, and my favorite fall sweater that I can’t wait to wear again soon. I hope you enjoy — let me know which interests you the most!

  1. Free Money for Female Founders: Female Founders Collective x FounderMade are running an innovation giveaway for up to $17,000 for a female entrepreneur. Applications are open here. Apply by September 12, 2023 (quick turnaround!)

  2. Apparently you don’t need an egg or sperm to create an embryo: Researchers in Israel have created a synthetic embryo from stem cells that were combined with chemicals and allowed to grow and develop until they were similar to a 14-day-old embryo. In many countries, this is the legal cut-off for embryo research. I wish I was in my perinatal epidemiology MPH class again to discuss this research. I can see the pros and cons of petri dish embryos. As the BBC said Embryo research is legally, ethically and technically fraught.”

  3. I’m ready for sweater weather: The heat index hit over 100 degrees in NC this week and I am pining for some cooler fall temps. Last year I bought this sweater in charcoal and it was my favorite. Washes well (lay flat to dry) and looks really chic with some jeans. I may need another color this year.

  4. 9 minutes on the future of work: This NPR podcast episode succinctly covered all of the arguments for and against white collar workers returning to the office, remote work, hybrid work, and how companies should move forward. My favorite takeaway was that companies should think about the actual jobs to be done and how to do them effectively.

  5. New technology identifies up to 20% more breast cancer cases: When combined with traditional mammography, the promising SoftVue whole breast ultrasound improves screening in women with dense breast tissue. Neat! I’ll be watching this.

That’s a wrap this week!

xoxo,

Katie
